The United States and Israel are to blame for the protests that broke out on Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani claimed on Tuesday. Meanwhile, opposition activists continued to call on citizens to persist with the demonstrations.
“The parliament condemns the Zionist, American, anti-revolutionary and anti-national action of the misled seditionists,” Larijani said during a parliament session.
Tens of thousands of Iranians rallied on Monday in support of the revolts sweeping across the Arab world, channeling their anger towards the Iranian regime. One protestor was killed and others were injured when clashes with the police broke out.
Opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi were placed under house arrest, thus prevented from attending the rallies.
Agents of the US, UK and Israel are behind Monday’s antigovernment protests of the Iranian opposition in support of the people of Tunisia and Egypt, the deputy head of Iranian police, General Ahmed-Reza Radan has declared.
He said that in the course of the clashes in Tehran, nine law enforcement officers and a number of civilians were injured. He also confirmed the accidental death of a passer-by.
The official estimates that some 150 people took part in the rally. He said that criminal cases have been opened in respect of those detained.
